There will be an Evening of Classical Guitar at St. Mary's Church, 44 N. Main St. in Cortland, beginning at 7pm Sunday April 10th. Classical guitarists from Ithaca College will perform a variety of music, from Bach and Villa-Lobos to Astor Piazzolla. If you love the guitar, don't miss this event! Admission is free, but donations will be accepted.

The performers are students of Professor Pablo Cohen of Ithaca College, where the program of study includes traditional classical guitar literature with special attention to performance practices of the baroque and pre-classical periods. Research into new streams of repertoire is emphasized by finding and performing original repertoire and by mastering transcription techniques.

Eight students will be participating, each with their own background and interests. Eric Pearson is a graduate student at Ithaca College. Prior to moving to the area, Eric was the acting executive director of The Infinity Performing Arts Program, Inc. He also taught in the public schools, gave private guitar lessons and coached several student music groups. In addition to teaching classes at Ithaca College and Cayuga Community College, he teaches privately and works as a freelance performer in the area.

Nick Malishchak is a sophomore who was originally from Madison, NJ and listens to a lot of blues-rock, but enjoys many styles including classical music. He will be performing a sonata by Joaquin Turina. Emma Markham is a freshman from Amherst, MA and also plays the flute and djembe, but hopes to be part of a Flamenco band. Her performance will include a prelude by Villa-Lobos. David Moore is now a senior at Ithaca College and will perform a transcription of Cello Suite No. 4 by J.S. Bach.

Russell Kniffin is a sophomore whose interests include film score composing and will perform sections of a lute suite by J.S. Bach. Freshman Ariana McMillan, who would like to be a professional music producer, will perform Venezuelan Waltzes by Rodrigo Riera. Junior Matthew Gillen will perform the challenging Chaconne by J.S. Bach, as well as the Las Estaciones PorteƱas by Astor Piazzolla.

Local musician Dave Richman studied Classical Guitar at SUNY Oneonta until 1980 and now enjoys private instruction from Pablo Cohen. He is a member of several local rock/blues groups (the Prophets), Jazz (CaseyMax Quartet), Dixieland (Ithaca Dixiekats) and Bluegrass Ensembles. At the April 10th event he will present music by Tarrega and Albeniz.

This event is co-sponsored by St. Mary's Church and Cortland Music, and is made possible by donations from the parishioners of St. Mary's as well as a NYSCA Decentralization grant. For further information, email John Sikora at mail@cortlandmusic.org (607) 758-3670.
